Esther Shapiro is een jonge vrouw die is opgegroeid in een ultra-orthodoxe gemeenschap in de wijk Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Op een dag besluit ze haar hechte geloofsgemeenschap en haar gearrangeerde huwelijk achter te laten. Esther wil muzikant worden en reist af naar Berlijn om haar droom te realiseren. Ze wordt echter achtervolgd door haar verleden.
