In 1506 wordt Leonardo da Vinci, de beroemdste kunstenaar van zijn tijd, beschuldigd van de moord op Caterina da Cremona. Wanneer hij wordt ondervraagd door Stefano Giraldi, een ambitieuze officier van het hertogdom Milaan, begint Leonardo over zijn leven te vertellen, vanaf de eerste ontmoeting met Caterina in Andrea del Verrocchio's werkplaats. Giraldi, die gefascineerd is door de persoonlijkheid van de kunstenaar, begint te vermoeden dat Leonardo misschien onschuldig is en gaat op onderzoek uit om de waarheid te achterhalen.
