Trust draait om het waargebeurde verhaal omtrent de beproevingen en triomfen van een van Amerika's rijkste en ongelukkigste families: de Gettys. In 1973 wordt John Paul Getty lll, de kleinzoon van de miljardair en oliemagnaat John Paul Getty, in Rome ontvoerd. Hoewel opa en kleinzoon een redelijk goede band lijken te hebben, blijkt dit nu niet. De rijke oliemagnaat weigert namelijk de grote som losgeld die de kidnappers eisen te betalen, waardoor de moeder van de tiener er alles aan moet doen om het geld op tijd bij elkaar te krijgen.
